What is a Snapchat Lens

A snapchat lens is a filter that is available on Snapchat that allows the user to alter their face by adding a filter on objects on top of it.

The Goal

The goal for this project was to create a Snapchat Lens that could be used by incoming first year students during their orientation and by all the other students once the school year started and everyone was there.

My Responsibilities

The creation of the Snapchat Lens was a collaborative effort between me and another graphic designer on the team. She was responsible for the creation of the assets used on the Lens (the ears and the face paint) while I was responsible for the assembly of the Lens in Snapchat’s Lens Studio. Throughout the whole process of the project, we were constantly taking critiques from each other on things that we could do to improve our respective parts.

This is what the final version of the Snapchat Lens looked like and this is the first image that we took once we got it to work properly.
The way that the whole process worked was that there was a QR code that had to be scanned by the user in Snapchat and that would unlock access to the filter for 2 days. During that time, they could use it whenever and even share it with friends so they could use it as well.
We made posters that had the QR code on it and posted them around our university center. We put them in locations that were easy to see and in open areas so it was easy to scan on their phones.
Over the course of one semester, the Lens had an outreach completely surpassing our expectations. To this day, the total number of times that the Snapchat Lens has been viewed is at over 40,000 times.
